Typical costs in buying a guitar

  • Determine the size of the guitar you need to purchase. A half size guitar for a child will cost you between $50 and $200 depending on the model you choose. It’s a good idea to consult an expert before buying a beginner guitar to make sure it is a true instrument and not a toy.

  • The modern classical guitar, also known as the Spanish guitar, typically comes with nylon strings and an hour glass shaped body. The neck is also wide. They can range from $100 to $400 for a beginners version and range from $500 to $5,000 for a mid-range and professional version.

  • Steel string guitars have the same shape as a classical guitar. The back of the instrument, however, tends to be flat or rounded and the neck is narrower. These guitars are used to play country, folk and blues and start at $100 to $500 for a beginner’s model and can range from $600 to $3,000 or a mid-range and professional version.

  • Hybrid guitars – which can be played acoustic or eclectic – are hollow bodied that include pickups so that the sound of the guitar can be heard. They range from $80 to $250 for a beginners model and $250 to $5,000 for mid-range to professional versions.

  • Twelve-string acoustic guitars have six pairs of strings. Each pair is played as one string. Prices start at $100 to $300 for a beginner model and range from $500 to $4,000 for mid-range to professional.

In addition to the base price of the instrument, you need to make sure that the neck fits the hand of the person who will be playing the guitar and that the height of the strings is adequate. The instrument needs to be playable by the person who is purchasing it. If the guitar is for a child, a half or three-quarter size guitar is suitable, but you should still measure the hand and string height to ensure they can play it.

Additional costs

  • You should purchase a case for your guitar to protect it while it is not being played or when you are transporting it from one location to another. A soft-shell case will range from $20 to $80 while a hard case ranges from $60 to $300.

  • Acoustic guitars will require an electric pickup if you intend to play it for an audience. The pickups range from $50 to $300. Have a professional install it.

  • Additional supplied include: guitar picks, $2 to $4; guitar strap, $10 to $30; extra strings, $2 to $20; and a guitar tuner, $15 to $100.
