The Quickest Way to Improve Your Playing Abilities

Regardless of your skill level, there is always room for improvement. The good news is you can improve your playing ability faster than you think by considering the following ideas. Some may find these steps a bit obvious, but often it is the obvious solutions that get overlooked! Try these ideas on for size, and see if your playing doesn’t improve quickly.

Devote an extra 15 minutes a day

15 minutes is a small amount of time in a day, but consider this: If you practice only 5 days a week, adding that extra 15 minutes of practice a day adds up to an extra 65 hours a year. If you practice every day (which is recommended), it bumps up to over 90 extra hours! With concentrated effort during that extra time, you can greatly accelerate your proficiency.

How can you make that extra 15 minutes? Cut down on your recreational web surfing. Skip that TV show, or record and watch it later and skip the commercials. (An hour-long network TV show typically has about 15 minutes of commercials — get the idea?) As a last resort, go to bed 15 minutes later, or get up 15 minutes earlier. The bottom line is, 15 minutes is not a lot of time, and if it is important to you, you can make the time.

Maximize your time and be prepared

In our busy day-to-day life, this step is often overlooked. You may find yourself in such a rush to accomplish things that you actually fall behind on preparedness. What does this mean? You may spend too much of your lesson and practice time getting ready to learn and practice. This effectively cuts your music time by a third or more. By preparing beforehand, you can actually save yourself stress and frustration, which will make you an even more effective player during the time you have set aside to become a better musician.

Here are a few tips to help you be better prepared:

  • Show up for your lessons on time, every time. Five to ten minutes early is even better.

  • Plan out your practice schedule each night for the following day.

  • At the end of a practice session, take the extra few minutes to organize everything for the following day’s practice session or lesson.

Concentrate on the basics

This may seem counter-intuitive. After all, aren’t you supposed to be moving beyond the basics? Isn’t that what we’re discussing here? Well, yes and no.

Music is like math in that you start with basic concepts and move from there to more complex ones. But often times, we can neglect the building blocks on which our abilities were built, and it can actually slow down the learning process if we need to go back to an aspect of our playing that we have let fall off.

Always spend at least a few minutes of each learning and practicing session going over scales and chord progressions, or revisit a piece of music that you haven’t played in a while.

Speed it up!

By following these simple suggestions, you can increase your playing ability over a very short period of time. Give them a try — you have nothing to lose!
