Anyone who plays rock guitar understands the need for a good guitar and a good amplifier. Without them, you won’t get the right sound and you will get discouraged in your playing. Music stores that sell guitars and amplifiers can be intimidating with all of the choices that they have available. Instead of worrying about picking out the right guitar and amplifier without knowing what you’re looking for, keep these tips in mind instead.

Picking out your rock guitar comes down to one simple rule: make sure you feel comfortable playing the guitar you choose. You can start by speaking with the employees in the music store to find out what they like and what they can suggest. If they are not able to give you suggestions to start with, sit down with a guitar and see how it feels in your hands and play it. The one that feels right to you and that sounds right to you is the one you should go with. Don’t get hung up on what brand of guitar you should buy. Focus on the feel instead.

A good rock amplifier for your guitar will be one that allows you to play fast and forceful without losing your sound. Rock guitar features a lot of distortion so the amplifier will need to be able to accommodate that. You may actually want to consider purchasing two amplifiers instead of one. The first amplifier would be your practice amp. A micro amp that only has a 10 watt capacity is perfect for that. Don’t go over 30 watts for a practice amp. 30 watts is perfect for home use and small gigs. Plus, the smaller amp will allow you to learn how to use it properly before you move into a more expensive version that has a lot more functions.

Combo amplifies that are 50 watts and higher are the type of amp you want for a larger public performance. The speaker will be included with the amplifier in order to magnify the sound of your guitar. Eventually you will want to own a full rack amplifier that has numerous speakers that are able to handle playing in a larger venue. Once again, an employee at your local music store can help you choose the right type of amplifier for your needs.
