Whether you are an advanced player or a beginner, if you are looking for a guitar amplifier, you can find a very good one for a lot less money if you are willing to buy used. Unlike fish tanks and water beds, there actually is a fair market for used guitar amps. How many people do you know that wanted to try a new instrument, went out and bought all the expensive equipment, only to give up in a few months – or even weeks? It’s more common than you may think.

If you want to buy a used guitar amp, you should be able to find a good, working amp for a fair price. Where do you look for used guitar amps? Try these three main spots:

Music stores

When buying anything related to music making, the first place that enters a player’s mind is their favorite local music store. It’s true that many offer great deals on returns – and you may get a screaming deal on a really expensive, barely used model that someone returned when they gave up their new hobby. Do not be afraid to negotiate – the store doesn’t want the older models on their shelves for long. Your music store is a good place to start because you can also shop for what you want and try out different amps with your guitar on-site.

Pawn shops

When someone cleans out their attic or garage and finds an old amplifier that they forgot they had, the first place they go to unload it quickly is the nearest pawn shop. They may have forgotten that the thing cost them a small fortune in the first place, and their loss is your gain. While it’s hit or miss with pawn shops, you may just get lucky and find the exact amp you want at a very low price. If you have some time to spare, visit several pawn shops at different times of the month.

The World Wide Web offers many opportunities for deals on all things new and used, and may be your best resource of all. From Craigslist to Ebay to individual music store sites, you have a lot of options. Once you know what you are looking for, it may be easier to find at the price you want on the Internet. The only down side is that you cannot plug in and hear what you are buying first. For this reason, it’s best to make sure that whomever you’re buying from has a good return policy.

Do your homework

Take the time to research the best amplifier for the type of music (and guitar) that you will be playing. You chose your guitar for its unique sound and style, so make sure that the amp you purchase complements it. Even though you can plug into any given amp, each one has its own tone, so if you can take your instrument with you to test the amp, do so. Be careful that you are purchasing an actual guitar amp, and not a bass or keyboard amp. While plugging in to them will make your guitar louder, it will not make it (or you) sound better.
